What Are WordPress Inode Limits? Print

  • 0

If you've had WordPress hosting for any length of time, you've probably seen the Inode Limit inside your cPanel:

This may sometimes be disconcerting to newbies who do not know what it is. The following page in our knowledgebase covers the technical terminology of an Inode:

In a Unix-style file system, an inode is a data structure that describes a filesystem object such as a file or directory. Each inode maintains the object's properties and disc block location(s). Filesystem object properties may contain metadata (latest modification, access, and modification timings) as well as owner and permission information. Directories are a list of names that have been allocated to inodes. A directory comprises entries for the directory itself, its parent, and its children.

Look At Inodes Like Individual Files

Therefore, 1 file (such as a PHP page, email, picture, etc.) is essentially equivalent to 1 Inode. All of our WordPress hosting plans include unlimited disc space, but have a restriction on the number of Inodes per account. Notice that when you hover over the information icon next to storage use, you will be able to see the Inode limitations of each hosting package.

What Uses The Most Inodes?

Nine times out of ten, when a user reaches these restrictions, it is because they are not frequently emptying their email inboxes or because they are attempting to host too many websites in a single cPanel. Spam folders, for instance, may easily get cluttered with trash. You may really configure cPanel to remove them automatically after 30 days. This is really how Gmail operates and is strongly recommended. You will also observe that two of the aforementioned packages have limitations on the amount of websites you may host per account, while the other two have no such restrictions. However, if you want to host more than 15 to 20 websites, a Reseller Account would be preferable.

Complimentary Backups Only For 100,000 Inodes

In order to maintain a high-speed cloud infrastructure, we must impose a restriction on our free nightly backups. After extensive testing, the threshold has been set at 350,000 Inodes OR 10GB of total disc utilisation. If one of these restrictions is exceeded, your cPanel will no longer be included in the free nightly backups. Simply expressed, this would place excessive demand on the Solid State Drives and result in a performance decrease.

How Many Inodes Does My WordPress Website Use?

A WordPress website with 20 or more pages of content often requires between 15,000 and 20,000 Inodes, which is comfortably under the limit. The majority of our clients never encounter a problem, and if they do, it is due to one of the aforementioned causes.

If you have any queries or issues regarding your account's restrictions, please contact our staff.
